HIT THE PAVEMENT TO FIGHT PEDIATRIC CANCER FIRST 5K RUN/WALK TO BENEFIT SBU SUNRISE FUND
The Bench Bar & Grill to Donate a Portion of Mother's Day Sales
STONY BROOK, N.Y., April 17, 2009 - The first annual 5K run/walk to help fight pediatric cancer and benefit patients being treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center will take place in Stony Brook on May 9. The run/walk starts at 9:30 a.m., at The Bench Bar & Grill, located at 1095 Rt. 25A. The Bench will donate a portion of its sales that evening during a post-race party, and the following day (Mother's Day), to the Sunrise Fund, which supports the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at SBUMC.
The race course, which begins and ends at The Bench, goes through historic Stony Brook Village and alongside Stony Brook Harbor. Following the run/walk will be free refreshments for all participants. The party will continue that evening with live music at The Bench. There will be free admission for all runners/walkers who bring their race number.
Pre-race registration is $20 per person. Registration after May 5 is $25 per person. For more information and to register go to www.sunrisefund.org, or contact Ray McKenna at Raymond.mckenna@stonybrook.edu or 631-444-6169.
The Sunrise Fund was created in 1999 as a grassroots organization by concerned parents of patients. Through the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at SBUMC, the fund raises money to establish numerous initiatives to help children fighting cancer and lend support to their families. Doctors, nurses, child care specialists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals make up the Sunrise Fund team.
